B'nai Mitzvah
At Congregation B’nai Israel, Bar or Bat Mitzvah (son or daughter of the Commandment) is a voluntary commitment but a significant one for both students and their families. In order to make this important decision, the student and his/her family should consider that B'nai Mitzvah is a covenant that includes student, parent, and congregation. “…not only is the child declaring that he has learned a certain body of knowledge, he is now included in the Jewish community of adults, meaning that he is declaring that he will take on the responsibility of performing the mitzvot ‘not only to live a Jewish life, but also to sanctify life. ” - Putting God on the Guest List, by Rabbi Jeffrey K. Salkin. All of us contribute toward this special journey of study and preparation in order to give both the process and the service itself meaning and beauty.

It is an affirmation of one's Jewish knowledge and maturity and, therefore, knowledge of Hebrew and Jewish studies extends beyond the ability to read a Torah portion. Congregation B'nai Israel's Board of Trustees has determined that, in order to be eligible for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony, a student must have completed certain educational and religious requirements, which are outlined in the B'nai Mitzvah Handbook.
